Carving Competition, Open Studio & Workshops

Fables in the style of Gibbons

Join us for London Craft Week 2022 at City & Guilds of London Art School with a two-day open-studio event. Our ever-popular student carving competition is back, and in honour of the Grinling Gibbons Tercentenary, the theme of the competition is Fables in the style of Gibbons

We can’t wait to see what the students come up with and we invite you to visit us to see the carvings evolve AND vote in our William Wheeler People’s Choice Prize! Look out for animals, legendary creatures, plants, inanimate objects and forces of nature! And expect some impressive work…of the 6 winners in last summer’s Grinling Gibbons 300 Award for emerging carvers in wood and stone, 5 were students or recent alumni of our carving courses. As well as watching the historic craft skills of wood and stone carving in action, you’ll be able to have a go at stone carving yourself.

Marking the launch of our 2022-24 research programme, Material Matters: Paper, the Art School is also hosting a collection of activities across the two days exploring the properties, uses and conservation of paper.

Paper Demonstrations
Exploring the properties, uses and conservation of paper, to mark the launch of its 2022-24 research programme, Material Matters: Paper, Students and Fellows will be running paper-related demonstrations, showcasing the specialist paper conservation and fine art techniques taught on our renowned degree courses.

Printmaking Workshop
You’ll have the opportunity to learn the traditional process of ‘blind printing’ with the Head of Printmaking, Jason Hicklin, who is leading a series of short, hands-on workshops on Saturday 14 May. Blind printing is the historic Intaglio printing process without the ink, so you’ll leave the Art School’s historic Print Room with beautiful debossed artwork but no inky fingers! The one-hour workshops are for over 18s £5 (+ booking fee) pp. CLICK HERE.

Talk and Tasting
On Saturday 14 May (afternoon only), you’re invited to join a free Talk & Tasting with Fabal Lager in the Courtyard.

Refreshments will be available from the café throughout the event.
